Man arrested after vandalizing Lincoln Memorial with a penny

Police have arrested a man who they say used a penny to carve into the Lincoln Memorial.

WAHINGTON (WUSA9) - A man has been arrested Tuesday in connection with vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial, police said.

A Park Police officer said he saw the suspect using a penny to engrave a message into the fifth pillar on the north side of the memorial.

The man was identified as 21-year-old Nurtilek Bakirov from Central Asia.

He is accused of malicious destruction of property. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $2,000 fine.
