D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier opens up before heading to NFL

DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier leaves the job on the 16th of the month. Days later she starts work as chief of security for all of the National Football League.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - D.C.'s popular Police Chief Cathy Lanier leaves her post in two weeks to become head of security for the National Football League.

Lanier has been police chief for 10 years, longer than anyone else.

During the one-on-one interview, she reflected on some of the cases that have stayed with her, most of them involved murdered or missing children or young adults.

Lanier also talked about how the police department has changed since she came on board. She said the sexual harassment was so bad, that she was either going to quit or report for work ready to fight.

She said she gave Mayor Muriel Bowser a recommendation on who should replace her, but she stopped short of giving the name.

Her last day on the job is Sept. 16. She starts with the NFL on Sept. 19.

Lanier worked with the Metropolitan Police Department for 26 years.
