Baby critically injured, step-grandpa charged with manslaughter

CAPITOL HEIGHTS, MD. (AP) - Authorities have charged a man with child abuse after paramedics found his 6-month-old step-grandson critically injured in a Capitol Heights home.

Prince George's County police Cpl. Nicole Hubbard says 48-year-old Lenwood Pearson has been charged with manslaughter, first-degree child abuse resulting in death and first and second-degree assault after the infant was injured on Tuesday.

Pearson is the infant's step-grandfather.

Paramedics called officers to Pearson's home on Tuesday evening. Hubbard says investigators believe the infant was injured while in the "sole care and custody" of Pearson.

Hubbard says the infant's injuries are life-threatening, but hasn't released further details. The baby is being treated at a hospital.

It's unclear whether Pearson has an attorney.
