Alarming number of infant deaths over last fortnight in DC

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Six infants have died in D.C. over the last two weeks, according to health officials. Health officials say, this is an alarming number considering the District's infant mortality rate is about seven per year.

According to authorities, two of the deaths are believed to be attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and happened at home.

Two of the other deaths are considered premature and happened in hospitals. The last two deaths, according to authorities, are described as unknown and are currently under investigation.

The D.C. Department of Health is hoping the sudden spike in deaths is a sad coincidence. However, if this is not the case, they say there may be a larger problem they have to look at.
