3 Five Guys restaurants shut down in DC

The D.C. government wants its money from three Five Guys restaurants. The Office of Tax and Revenue says owners failed to pay nearly $531,000 in back taxes.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) - Three Five Guys restaurants in DC have been shut down after failing to pay sales tax collected from their customers. They failed to pay the District nearly $531,000 in sales tax.

DC’s Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) announced the revocation of the restaurants’ sales tax certificates on Tuesday. Without the certificates, none of the restaurants can sell food or beverages.

The restaurants that had their certificates revoked are located at:

  • 1400 I Street, NW
  • 1300 2nd Street, NE
  • 470 L’Enfant Plaza East, SW

According to OTR, they made numerous attempts to collect from the restaurants and that the owners failed to respond to multiple collection notices.

OTR is currently investigating businesses for sales tax compliance. Any business found to not be in compliance is potentially subject to seizures, bank levies, and additional certificate revocations. Businesses looking to pay any liability due or to arrange payment plan can do as at MyTaxDC.gov.
