5 University of Maryland students displaced after house fire

Fire badly damages home of UMD students

COLLEGE PARK, MD. (WUSA9) - Five University of Maryland students have been displaced after an overnight house fire in Hyattsville, Prince George's County Fire said.

The fire happened around 2 a.m. in the 6700 block of Baltimore Ave., officials said. A total of five students have been displaced by the fire. None of them were injured.

Two firefighters were injured during a partial collapse and a mayday call was made. Both firefighters have non-life-threatening injuries.

University officials say the blaze charred a senior's graduation cap and gown, which she was supposed to wear at graduation this weekend.

The president of the University of Maryland heard about the charred cap and gown and has promised to get her a replacement.

It is not clear what caused the fire. Damages are estimated at $175,000.
