Christmas lights vandalized in Chesapeake

A man in Chesapeake is sending a warning to neighbors --- asking them to keep an eye on their Christmas decorations

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WVEC) -- A Chesapeake man is warning other people to keep an eye on their Christmas decorations, after someone cut the wires for some of his lights.

Richard Johnson said he decorates his house every year for Christmas and has been doing it for nearly 30 years.

"Everybody enjoys the decorations so I decide to donate to the neighborhood...have a little Christmas spirit," he said.

Earlier this week was when he noticed someone cut the wires in front of his house on Elder Avenue.

"I was able to salvage them," said Johnson. He said he was able to fix some of the lights.

Richard doesn't see a need to be mad or make a big deal out of it because the light that shines brightest every year is his mother, who he inherited all of the lights from when she died five years ago from lung cancer.

"In her honor, I want to light it all up every year possibly in memory of her, celebrate life," Johnson said.

Celebrate life and spreading joy, that's all he wants, even with recent health problems himself.

"I'm making ends meet with what I have and I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas," said Johnson.
