Another Charles Co. schools employee accused of sexual misconduct

A teacher from Charles County is going to court on charges of sexually abusing children.

CHARLES COUNTY, MD (WUSA9) - Another employee of the Charles County Public Schools system has been accused of sexual misconduct with a minor.

Authorities charged Ronald Wells, a Henry Lackey High School science teacher, with two counts of sex abuse of a minor in 2016.

According to Charles County Public Schools, Wells was placed on paid administrative leave when a student came forward with claims about his conduct.

Wells was eventually indicted in connection to the case January 2017.

The Charles County Public Schools system did not send a letter to parents at Lackey High School when the claims against Wells were first made. A spokesperson with the school system sent WUSA9 the following statement as to why parents were not alerted about the case:

"The school system did not send a letter home to parents in May 2016 as there were no charges, only allegations. We continued to cooperate in the investigations when requested. Charges were not filed for more than 8 months after the initial allegations and Mr. Wells did not teach in any school during the 2016-17 school year."

Charles County Public Schools said Wells was placed in a temporary position in the school system's administrative offices. The system said he will work there until the charges filed against him are resolved.

School board chairman Michael Lukas also said that Wells did not have contact with children after he was placed on administrative leave.

Wells' trial is slated to begin July 18. His attorney, Thomas Morrow, sent WUSA9 the following statement about the case:

"Mr. Wells emphatically denies the charges and looks forward to a jury hearing the truth at trial."

The revelation about the accusations against Wells comes just four days after officials in Charles County revealed a former teacher's aide had also been accused of sexual misconduct.

Authorities claim Carlos Bell sexually assaulted multiple students while he worked for the Charles County Public Schools system. Bell is also HIV positive.
