Calif. man, 84, accused of shooting at doctor

An 84-year-old man was charged Friday with trying to kill a doctor inside a medical center near San Francisco because he thought pain medication he received two years ago had made him sick, the prosecutor said.

Raymond Iwase is accused of confronting the unidentified physician on the second floor of the Daly City building about 1:30 p.m. PT Wednesday. He brandished a silver handgun, then said, "You gave me a shot in the past and you made me sick," according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

The doctor ran and heard what he told police sounded like a gunshot as he turned a corner.

Police surrounded and searched the building for several hours but found no gunman or immediate evidence of a shooting. Investigators later found bullet fragments in the hallway, the San Jose Mercury News reported.

Based on witness descriptions, police located Iwase at his Daly City home, where he lived alone, and arrested him about 10 p.m. without incident.

"I'm an old man. There's nothing you should be worried about," he told officers, Wagstaffe said.

A handgun and ammunition were recovered, but not the weapon used in the shooting, he added.

Iwase is being held in the San Mateo County Jail on charges of premeditated attempted murder and felony assault with a firearm.
