Armed robbery triggers major crash, carjacking on BW Pkwy

An armed robbery led to a major crash and a carjacking on BW Parkway Tuesday morning.

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- An armed robbery that triggered a crash involving several cars and a carjacking shutdown part of the Baltimore-Washington Pkwy Tuesday morning, United States Park Police said.

The crash happened around 12:37 a.m. between MD-198 and MD-197, according to authorities. Several cars were destroyed in the crash and several people were injured. Police say all of the injuries are non-life-threatening injuries.

WUSA9 reporter Hilary Lane reports that a car was traveling southbound at a high rate of speed when it crashed into multiple cars. At least one shot was fired at the scene. Police say that a car was stolen from the crash scene and then later recovered at 19th and M Street in NE, D.C. The suspect was not in the car when police found it.

According to Laurel police this major crash may have all started with an armed robbery that happened around midnight at the Tastee Diner located at 118 Washington Blvd.

Three armed suspects stole $140 and drove off in a burgundy BMW into Howard County. They eventually ended up involved in the crash on the BW Pkwy.

Southbound lanes of the BW Pkwy have reopened.
