Child killed, woman injured after being hit by van in Bowie

BOWIE, Md. (WUSA9) -- A tragic accident claimed a toddler's life while she and her grandmother were walking across the street Saturday afternoon in Bowie.

The two were crossing Rt. 197 around 12:30 p.m. when a van on Old Chapel Road made a left turn on to Rt. 197 and crashed into them.

The child's father was getting an oil change. His two-year-old daughter and his mother crossed the street to a CVS to kill time while waiting for the oil change.

The father saw it all happen.

"There was a sad look on everyone's face. I know the mechanic went over there to see what had happened but he was shook up," a witness, George Bell said.

The toddler and her grandmother were taken to the hospital where the girl died and the grandmother suffered two broken legs and is in serious condition.

She was a sweet girl. The mother loved her. She was a sweet little girl. She's going to be missed.

You never get past it, she never will. I don't wish this on any mother. If you have a child, to lose a child," said Art Holder, a relative.

All indications are the two were in the crosswalk when the tragedy happened. No charges have been filed at this point. The investigation continues. The driver did remain at the scene.
