Baby boy born on I-270 early Friday

GERMANTOWN, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County fire and rescue officials say a baby was born Friday morning on I-270.

It happened around 6 a.m. near Middlebrook Lane in the southbound lanes of the highway, Montgomery County fire and rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said.

The parents were on their way to the hospital after laboring through the night, Piringer said. They had to pull over when they realized they weren't going to make it.

Emergency officials evaluated and assisted with the birth and are transporting the mom and child to a local hospital. Piringer says the mother and baby boy are fine.

Maryland State Police reports there is some traffic back up in the area.
