Arlington Special Election Tuesday: County Board

ARLINGTON, Va. (WUSA9)--Yes, Arlington, you have a special election Tuesday, April 8. Residents will be going to the polls to elect someone for a County Board seat. This is the seat currently held by Chris Zimmerman who resigned. The winner of Tuesday's special election will fill the remainder of Zimmerman's term which ends at the end of the year.

The polls will be open 6am-7pm on Tuesday.

There are four candidates vying for this office. Some of the key issues during the campaigning have been: affordable housing, the Columbia Pike streetcar project, government spending, school crowding and the Long Bridge Park aquatics center.

Alan Howze (democrat)
: an Arlington native, he works for IBM as a management consultant. He worked on Capitol Hill for Rep. Rick Boucher (D-VA), and served as then Governor Mark Warner's Political Director in Richmond. Howze supports the Columbia Pike streetcar project.


Stephen W.C. Holbrook (independent): a 33 year resident of Arlington. He is a retired FBI Supervisory Special Agent Accountant. He is also served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam.

Janet Murphy (independent green party): She is currently employed at an Arlington hotel. She used to be a software professional in Virginia in financial, environmental, entertainment and defense computer systems; Real Estate Agent VA, DC and MD; property manager; substitute teacher at all levels. I was a Field Interviewer for 2012 Commercial Building Energy Consumption Study (CBECS) for Department of Energy through Westat, Inc.

John Vihstadt (independent): a 30 year resident of Arlington. He has served on the Planning Commission and Housing Commission. He supports an upgraded bus system on Columbia Pike. When he lived on Columbia Pike he served on the Board of the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization (CPRO) and as President of the Arlington Village Condominium Board of Directors.
