Suspect assaulted officer in Alexandria officer-involved shooting

Police say the 34-year-old female officer was struck in the head with a brick and a pipe by a man in Old Town Alexandria.

ALEXANDRIA, VA. (WUSA9) - An officer was assaulted by a suspect before firing a shot in Alexandria Wednesday morning, Alexandria police said.

The shooting happened in the area of King St. and St Asaph St, Alexandria police said. Multiple officers responded to the scene of the incident.

Police say around 6:45 a.m., officers responded to a call for a disorderly man attempting to smash in car windows. The suspect assaulted the responding police officer by striking her in her head.  

A female officer was the only one who was attacked, authorities stated.

The officer then discharged her weapon. Nobody was injured by the shot. 

The suspect has been identified as Clyde Eugene Reynolds, 51, of no fixed address. 

Police said a suspect is in custody. The officer has been transported with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Authorities said the 34-year-old has been an officer for one year. She's on administrative leave pending the investigation.
