Man wakes up to gunman in house

A burglar was breaking into his apartment, grabbing his gun for protection.

ALEXANDRIA, VA (WUSA9) - A man was injured after a gun went off while struggling with an intruder at his apartment complex early Sunday morning in Fairfax County.

Around 2 a.m., police responded to the 3500 block of South George Mason Drive for report of a man running down a hallway and banging on doors in an apartment building.

When they arrived, a 27-year-old man told police someone tried to break into his home.

He was transported to the hospital in stable condition.

Siobhan Baker is a resident of Bailey's Crossing apartment homes.

"We have security so all of these buildings are pretty secure. I'm really surprised by it actually," she said.

Another resident said, "That usually doesn't happen around here and that's why I like this area and this apartment complex however no place is perfect."

"It seems like a pretty one and off incident but I would hope there's effort to catch the guy," said another resident.

Police are searching for a 6-foot tall white man with an average build and blue eyes. He was wearing dark clothes.
