Alexandria school closes due to natural gas leak

ALEXANDRIA, VA. (WUSA9) - A natural gas leak near Jefferson-Houston School has forced officials to close early Thursday, according to Alexandria Public Schools.

All students evacuated safely and are being released early. Officials said teachers at the school will contact parents to work out a plan for each child.

Parents and guardians are being asked to pick up their child before 1 p.m. from the playing field on Cameron Street or from George Washington Middle School after 1 p.m. No child will be released without being signed out by a parent or guardian.

After 1:00 p.m. all students will be transported to George Washington Middle School and will remain there for the rest of the day. Buses will be available to take students home from George Washington Middle School at the usual dismissal time of 2:35 p.m. for Jefferson-Houston students.

All after-school activities are canceled at Jefferson-Houston School. Thursday night’s Back-to-School Night at Jefferson-Houston is also canceled.
