Roughly 240,000 people boarded the entire system Monday morning as of 10 a.m.

According to Metro, riders reported more room on Orange Line trains and more available parking at Orange Line stations.

WUSA9 transportation reporter Martin Di Caro reports that the last four Orange Line stations saw morning rush hour drop from 23,000 boardings two weeks ago to 15,000 Monday as riders shifted to the Silver Line.

Over the weekend, there were just over 32,000 trips Saturday and another 19,000 trips to or from Silver Line stations on Sunday. Metro called the numbers a "very respectable start."

Before the Silver Line, it had been almost 25 years since Metro last opened a new line. The Green Line opened in 1991.

Phase One of the Silver Line opened to the public on Saturday, with five new stops in Northern Virginia at McLean, Tysons Corner, Greensboro, Spring Hill and Wiehle-Reston East. There's a total of 11.7 miles of new track.
