5 rescued from fiery crash in Charles Co.

Toddlers were rescued from a burning car. Now, all but one family member is out of the hospital.

CHARLES COUNTY, MD (WUSA9) - A family of five survived a fiery crash thanks to a daring rescue by officers, firefighters, and a Good Samaritan. The Charles County Sheriff’s Department released dash cam video Friday, one week after the rescues.

The video shows an officer pulling up to a fireball in the woods off Saint Charles Parkway Sept. 2nd. A car slammed into a tree and burst into flames.

An officer pulled the injured driver away from the car. A Good Samaritan offered a fourth fire extinguisher to no avail as the fire continues to rage. Then the officers hear there are passengers trapped inside, including two toddlers.

“That changes everything,” said Officer Lamar Hamilton, “we’re not worried about getting hurt or the dangers we just want to get the kids out of the car.”

“I don’t care what happens to me as long as they make it,” added his partner officer Justin Bottorf, “especially the kids they have a lot more life to live.”

Only one family member remains hospitalized with severe burns.
