2 dead in shooting at police officer's home

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County Police say two people are dead after a shooting late Wednesday night.

Police say an off-duty police officer identified as James Stirkens, a 27-year veteran of the Montgomery County Police Department, shot and killed his son after the 25-year-old stabbed his mother in their home. The son has been identified as Christopher Stirkens.

It happened at a home in the 7400 block of Lake Katrine Terrace.

According to officials, James Stirkens walked into a second floor bedroom to find his son stabbing his wife. That's when police say he shot and killed his son.

Police say James Stirkens called 911 and stayed on the line while trying to save his wife. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition where she died from her stab wounds. She has been identified as 53-year-old Denise Stirkens.

James Stirkens is assigned as a patrol Sergeant in the Silver Spring District. He has been placed on routine administrative leave.

Police are trying to determine whether or not James Stirkens used his service weapon in the shooting. Police say they believe he used a handgun.

We're told Christopher lived at home. The couple also has two daughters who were not at the home during the incident.

It's unclear what Christopher used to stab his mother. Police say they have identified several items inside the home that could have been used as a weapon in the stabbing.

Police are continuing to investigate this incident and no charges have been filed.
