17-year-old shot near Gaithersburg library

GAITHERSBURG, Md. (WUSA9) -- Montgomery County Police are investigating a shooting that happened near the Gaithersburg Library, which was closed today. They are still trying to figure out why this happened.

WUSA9 has learnt that a 17-year-old girl was shot and is expected to survive.

Police are looking into the possibility that the shooting may have been over a jacket but they cannot say for certain. They also say they do not believe it was a robbery. They are calling this an accidental shooting.

The call came out around 1:00 p.m. at 18330 Montgomery Village Avenue and Christopher Lane. Chopper 9 was above the scene where police were actively investigating and collecting evidence.

The 17-year-old girl was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

People who work around here are very concerned. The public library just re-opened in January after a major renovation.

"It's kind of scary. My first reaction was we need to lock the doors. That hits a little close to home. I've been in this building for 18 years," Dee Fielden, works nearby.

"We noticed the police dogs searching around. This area has a spotty reputation," Robert Rubin, works nearby.

Police are talking to two adult men and the 17-year old victim at the hospital.

They are trying to figure out if there was any type of relationship between the three.
