LIST: Recommended used cars for teens

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- When it's time for teenagers to start driving, it's time for parents to begin stressing out. Many of our teens are not driving cars that offer good crash protection or enough safety technology.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has released its first ever list of recommended used cars for teens, and a list of the most important guidelines when purchasing a car.

FULL LIST: Recommended used vehicles for teens

Young drivers should stay away from high horsepower which can tempt them to drive faster. Bigger, heavier vehicles protect better in a crash. There are no minicars or small cars on the recommended list.

They highly recommend Electronic Stability Control, especially for curves and slippery roads. The car you choose should have the best safety ratings possible.

Many parents want to purchase older cars for their teens first vehicle, which may not have all the safety features.

The institute looked at budget as a consideration as well.
