Metro Blue Line display glitch fixed after WUSA9 inquiry

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) – Metro says a glitch that knocked Blue Line train arrivals off platform displays has been fixed after a WUSA9 inquiry.

"We believe that this matter has now been resolved," said Metro spokesman Dan Stessel. "New code has been pushed out today."

Last week, Stessel said that Metro had reprogrammed the displays to always show the next Blue Line train so riders could decide whether to stay Blue or make a Yellow transfer.

WUSA9 observed signs not working on the final day of Silver Line trials, Friday, and on the launch of Silver's first real rush hour, Monday.

Stessel said Metro believed the displays had been properly programmed prior to the WUSA9 inquiry, but that the system was giving preference to arriving Silver Line trains instead.

The "always Blue" displays are only intended for 14 stations where Metro considers Yellow a likely alternative.

"Always Blue" displays are intended for DC bound platforms at Pentagon, Pentagon City, Crystal City, National Airport, Braddock Road, King Street, Van Dorn St., and Virginia bound platforms from Rosslyn, Foggy Bottom, Farragut West, McPherson Square, Metro Center, Federal Triangle, and Smithsonian.

Stessel said the system had been mistakenly set-up with the stations' old Blue/Orange configurations, with no measure to prevent the new Silver Line trains from pushing Blue Line trains off the display.

"The PIDS (passenger information displays) were coded to always show something not Orange," Stessel said. "Now with Silver in the mix, under certain circumstances the signs were accepting the nearest Silver train as the not Orange option and displaying that."

Stessel said the problem was limited to platforms serving trains outbound to Virginia.
