WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- All this month, we've told you how a safe place to play is a basic right for every child. For over a year, The Homeless Children's Playtime Project worked endlessly to get a playground at the DC General shelter for its youngest residents.
That playground is finally a reality, but there's still an urgent need for money to keep the playground open and safe. This is how some very special people will benefit from your much needed donation.
"The first thing the children see when they come out of their shelter every morning is the jail. And, over to the left is an abandoned building, behind there is another abandoned building, and then there's the meth clinic," says Jamila Larson.
The executive director of The Homeless Children's Playtime Project describes the desolate landscape in clear view of the children who have no place to go. Their temporary home at the District's largest family shelter is no sanctuary.
"Every child needs to let loose and relax at the end of a long day, even under the best of circumstances. And, our children are compounded by the stress of homelessness. So, it's even more important for our kids," Larson says.
The playground now offers a respite from the harsh reality that engulfs the DC General campus.
"It's not only for the little kids, it's for the big kids, too!" Kayla Briggs.
Her mom Stephanie Briggs agrees. She says, "It's a good thing for them to burn off some of that energy when they come home from school,"
In order for that playground to stay open, it has to be supervised at all times. And, that takes money.
"It will open up their minds. Their parents will be happy, and they don't have to see their kids in the street," Teara Jenkins says.
And, your donation can help them continue to do that.
"Children are looking around them for messages from adults and from their environment as to what their value and worth is. And, we want them to feel like they matter. And, that they deserve a playground like this," says Jamila Larson.
