Survey: Lack of drugs harms patient care

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Patient care is still crippled by drug shortages.

A survey of pharmacy directors compared how the shortages affect patient outcome. Nearly half of those who responded reported adverse events at their facilities. The pharmacy directors came from a variety of health care settings.

The affects of the drug shortages include:

  • Patient deaths
  • Medication errors
  • Cancelled care
  • Delayed treatment

According to the Food and Drug Administration, new drug shortages were down in 2012 to 117, from 251 in 2011. The survey was conducted byNorthwestern Medicine in conjunction with MedAssets. The results are published in the November/December issue of theJournal of Managed Care Pharmacy (JMCP).
