(WUSA) -- Dr. Rachel Brem from George Washington University Hospital believes the new guidelines on breast health will turn back the clock on advancements in women's health.

This week, a government task force said women under 50 years old do not need a mammogram.  The report said women between 50 and 74 only need a mammogram every other year.  It added self-breast exams do no good.  The new rules do not apply to women in high-risk categories.

Dr. Brem is the director of breast imaging and intervention at GWU Hospital.  She says in 48 hours, she has seen more mammogram cancelations than ever before.  Dr. Brem disagrees with the new guidelines, and said women should keep doing what they've been taught to do over the last few decades.  Dr. Brem spoke with Andrea Roane on 9NEWS NOW Wednesday morning.  You can watch the interview in the video player on the right.

The American Cancer Society agrees.  It is remaining with its position of annual mammograms for women over 40.
