(WUSA) -- I recently visited the studios of Dr. Mehmet Oz in New York City, just days before his new talk show is set to launch.
After a dynamic taping that included diet and exercise advice I had never heard before... an eye-opening segment on kidney stones (Dr. Oz had real kidneys and stones on the set!) and demonstrations on how to save someone who is choking or in cardiac arrest... Dr. Oz sat down for our one-on-interview... with energy, and a smile!
One of the first things I asked him:
"So how do you go from an operating room to a TV studio? How do you make that transition?"
Dr. Oz says, "You know, they are remarkably similar. I know that sounds stunning to most folks out there hearing that. But when you are in an operating room, you rely on a lot of very well trained people, a lot of moving parts. You have to make quick decisions."
And referring to his new set in the studios at '30 Rock,' he says, "The theater we've created here... we actually have the same look and feel. A lot of folks are good at what they do and a ton of support at every level."
But at the center of it all, is a physician who practices what he preaches.
He eats healthy. You can't find any junk food or soda behind the scenes, in the green room for guests or elsewhere.
The two supplements Dr. Oz takes on a daily basis are Vitamin D and DHA, a brain-boosting Omega-3 fatty acid. Other than that, he believes its best to get the majority of your nutrients, especially antioxidants, from fresh fruits and vegetables.
Dr. Oz also shared his secrets for living life full of energy, and for mitigating stress.
He says, "Sleep seven and a half hours a night. Sounds so obvious, but you have to do it. You have to practice 'sleep hygiene'. Things like turning the lights down a half hour before bedtime so your body starts making melatonin. So when your brain chemistry that is hard wired to go to sleep when the lights go out... the brain can actually do what it is supposed to do."
The doctor also starts every day with 7 minutes of yoga poses and stretches.
He says, "I can meditate to it because my body's busy so my mind doesn't race."
Dr. Oz also plans to shamelessly tackle what he says is one of the most common problems Americans complain to him about.... lack of sexual intimacy in their day to day lives.
Dr. Mehmet Oz: "The fact that we are not having sex anymore in America and, in fact, we're not."
"We don't address the physiological problems that hinder us. For men its erectile dysfunction; for women, it is sometimes a change of life or more commonly obesity, body image... They don't feel proud, they don't feel desired anymore.
" If you are not having as much sex as you should, you will pay for it in years of life lived and the quality of those years."
Dr. Oz will tackle this and many other common health and wellness concerns when his new show debuts on WUSA 9. Look for the first show on Monday, September 14th at 3pm.
