BURKE, Va. (WUSA) -- Sue and Don Miller say they've struggled with their weight since childhood. Both grew up in families that flavored fried foods and sweets over healthier fare.

"I've been heavy my entire life I had been active but active didn't take the weight off," says Sue.

After one dieting failure after another coupled with the current breathing problems and chronic fatigue, they knew it was time for a change.

They decided on the Serotonin Plus Weight Loss Program founded by Dr. Robert Posner.

The plan combines practical lifestyle changes, like exercise, everyday foods, and a serotonin based dietary supplement.

"So anybody whose overweight that has carbohydrate cravings probably to some extent has serotonin imbalance too," explains Dr. Posner.

Dr. Posner says serotonin is the mood chemical of the brain too little seratonin can trigger emotional eating in response to stress.

Don says he and his wife made an overhaul in their eating habits.

He says, "We got into a whole new life schedule of a new diet."

Instead of starchy carbohydrates, they stock up on more fruits and vegetables, take a few extra moments to prepare food in healthy way, and add exercise to their routine.

Both Sue and Don Miller believe the serotonin supplement helped them shed and keep off the pounds.

"It cuts your appetite for the carbs so you don't crave the foods and eat what you basically should eat, it enhances your mood I think," says Sue.

Dr. Arthur Frank with the George Washington University Weight Managment Program warns for any patient who depend on this chemical to lose weight.

"Serotonin has a lot of effects, it effects your alertness, it effects your sleep, it effects your appetitie, it effects your mood," explains Dr. Frank.

Yet Sue and Don believe the Serotonin Pill diet program has finally given them the jump start they needed.

Don reached his goal of 190 poubds in November, and Sue has 3 more pounds to go.
