A New Approach To Treating Nail Fungus

ASHBURN, Va. (WUSA)-- Few will ever discuss it, but it happens to millions. Nail fungus. It lies beneath the surface of our nail and getting rid of it can be one of the most frustrating ordeals.

It is estimated that around 10-percent of the population deals with nail fungus. Up until now only harsh treatments were available. Now a new non-surgical laser called the PinPointe Laser treatment may change that for sufferers.

John Saaty first noticed a little discoloration on his toe nails but didn't think about seeking medical attention until his wife intervened.

"Ya know it bothered my wife before it bothered me," says Saaty.

Signs of a fungal infection may begin as a white or yellow spot on the nail. As the infection grows the nails become thicker and more painful.

Traditional oral treatments need to be taken daily, for as long as 90 days and may cause side effects such as upset stomach.

Dr. Richard Mendlesohn with the Family Foot and Ankle Centers says the PinPointe Laser treatment gives people a more immediate, yet painless option.

Dr. Mendelsohn explains,"The laser is an infrared laser and it's tuned to the particular spectrum of fungus. We're penetrating the nail so we don't have to remove the nail and we don't have to use anesthesia."

The treatment is finished in about 45 minutes and Dr. Mendelsohn says it allows a clear nail to grow in place of the infected one.

"The laser actually kills the fungus on the nail bed and as the nail grows out, the nail that grows in will have no nail so it won't be infected," says Dr. Mendelsohn.

For patients such as John, he now knows this former problem is incredibly common and embarrassment shouldn't stop someone from seeking help.

John says it's not necessary for people to suffer in silence.

"Whether you're playing sports or you're on the beach, whatever it may be, it's really inconvenient and painful, go in and get some help," says John.
