WASHINGTON DC, (WUSA) -- Washington DC trainer, Dawn Maynard, says these tough economic times have meant a change in their exercise routine for many.

Dawn says, "Gym memberships are going down. Many people are canceling them because they can't afford them."

The DC based personal trainer says that doesn't mean you should stop working out. Dawn says there's no reason you can't do it outside or right in your own home.

Dawn says, "We can use anything to work out at your house. You can use a water bottle and old pillows."

Chevy Chase resident Rue Zitner is a busy working mom who's had to cut back on "extras."

Rue says, "Right now I don't have enough money in the budget to belong to a gym. There are a lot of demands with the economy. I feel really good that I am saving money."

Dawn has a few basics for Rue. First up, cardio several times a week to get herself moving.

She says, "Get your heart rate going, have some fun moving the body around."

For 73-year-old Bethesda resident, Ellie Zartman, what's happened on Wall Street has drastically impacted what she can afford.

Ellie says, "Think about my retirement 401 is now a 201. I really do need to work out at home."

Dawn says, as people age, posture often suffers, and the ability to balance does too. Working out can help prevent hip injuries and serious falls.

She says, "Work on posture, work on balance and get the core engaged at all times and in everything you do."

For strength building, Dawn says you can use small weights and unstable services like a Bosu ball. If you don't have that, even a pillow and water bottles can work.

Whether it's cardio, stretching or strength training, Dawn says start very slow; safety first!
