WASHINGTON, DC (CNN)--Opening a window to let the spring breeze in can be risky for Sara Sander, who suffers from allergies to pollen.
Sara says, "We just make sure the windows are closed and very well sealed." That's not the only step Sara took to allergy-proof her house. She also removed most of the carpeting and installed a state-of-the-art air filtration system. Dr. Alpen Patel is an allergist with the Emory University School of Medicine and says that there are other ways to protect yourself during allergy season. He says, "Showering or bathing at night basically taking the pollen off your body or your hair. Limiting outdoor activities for those who suffer from severe springtime allergies, including activities like gardening and playing outside. So you don't miss out on the season altogether, there are medications to alleviate symptoms." Dr. Patel says, "We usually recommend taking an antihistamine or an antihistamine decongestant, some of which are now available over the counter." Doctors also recommend keeping your pets clean and out of your bedroom. Pollen can get into their thick coats and make it difficult to keep allergy symptoms at bay.
