ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - A lime company has agreed to pay a $27,720 civil fine for exceeding air pollution standards at its plant in Giles County.

The fine is part of a consent order issued by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

According to the order, agency inspectors found that particulate matter emissions from a kiln at Chemical Lime Company of Virginia's plant exceeded the allowable level on one day in December.

Ken Curtiss with the company's parent, Texas-based Lhoist North America, tells The Roanoke Times that remedial action has been taken. Curtiss says the company believes the plant is now in compliance.

He says the company doesn't believe the emissions harmed public health or the environment.
