WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- What do hundreds of girls in Kenya and Washington, D.C. have in common?
They're receiving much-needed health education thanks to a local organization.
Girls Health Ed, a foundation aiming to boost the over-all well-being of hundreds of young ladies, held a fundraiser in Washington, D.C.
Girls Health Ed raised nearly $6,000 to bring health education and self-esteem workshops to 400 low-income girls in Washington, D.C., New York City, Los Angeles and Kenya.
As an organization, they have served more than 1,100 girls so far. The workshops the foundation hosts focus on nutrition, physical fitness, body image and self-esteem as well as personal care and hygiene.
The Girls around the Globe event was held at the United Nations Foundation and it was emceed by Sarah Fraser.
Special guests included Sarish Khan, Miss Pakistan, Shannon O'Brien, Miss District of Columbia International 2016 and Mia Simms, Miss Maryland International 2016.
