(GANNETT) -- As news of Cory Monteith's death sinks in, many wonder how 'Glee' writers will handle it on the show. Representatives for the show and Fox haven't released any details on how they will deal with Monteith's death on the show yet. His character, Finn Hudson, was mentoring McKinley High's Glee Club and he was still in love with his ex-girlfriend Rachel Berry, who is played by real life love Lea Michele.
We take a look at how shows have handled unexpected deaths in the past.
Some shows dealt with the death of a cast member in recent memory by killing off their characters:
Dallas killed off the character of JR Ewing after Larry Hagman passed away from a long battle with cancer in 2012. The show after his death opened with a tribute and moving funeral for JR Ewing. The character died of gunshot wounds.
When John Ritter died, 8 Simple Rules For Dating My Teenage Daughter took a short hiatus and then returned with a 1 hour show in which Paul Hennessy's wife gets a phone call saying he had a heart attack in a store. Ritter died from a previously undiagnosed heart condition in 2003.
Phil Hartman's character, Bill McNeal, on Newsradio also died from a heart attack after Hartman was killed by his wife in 1998. Hartman's wife committed suicide after shooting him. The show returned for its fifth season with characters returning from Bill McNeal's funeral.
