Emotional vigil held for 2-year-old killed by car

BOWIE, Md. (WUSA9) -- Cries of anguish could be heard from an emotional vigil held at the scene of an accident where a toddler lost her life last Saturday.

Dynesti Maraj, 2, was struck and killed by a van in Bowie when she was crossing Rt. 197 at Old Chapel Road with her grandmother. Dynesti's family members and supporters honored her short life Wednesday night at a memorial set up at the intersection.

"We just cannot explain this ... for this to be so close to home," said one man in attendance who said he was a minister within the family.

"This is devastating," said a woman at the vigil. "It's really devastating ... I'm still speechless."

The driver of the van that hit Dynasti remained at the scene and police are still investigating the accident.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to cover funeral expenses for Dynesti -- http://www.gofundme.com/otczqc -- who will be laid to rest next Wednesday.
