WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) - DC Police confirm a fire at a multi-story apartment building at 2330 Good Hope Rd SE has left one person dead.

According to the DC Fire Union, firefighters performed CPR on a female victim rescued from Apt. 221.  The middle-aged woman was taken to a local hospital where police say she was pronounced dead around 9:00 Monday night.

A second alarm was called after fire spread from Apt. 221, which is said to be a basement level apartment, to other floors in the building.

There were reports of heavy smoke in the basement and stairwells of the building, with some residents evacuated. Most were told to shelter in place in their apartments.  Some residents had to be treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

The identity of the victim has not been released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
