WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A recent study found that the Washington, D.C. area is the fifth best place in the nation for black-owned businesses. Baltimore, Md. is number 10 on the list.
According to financial advisory website NerdWallet, D.C. "offers a growing technology industry, an educated population and a dynamic mix of public and private sectors." It names Ben's Chili Bowl as one of the most celebrated black-owned businesses in the area.
It also notes that entrepreneurs can use the resources available at the National Black Chamber of Commerce, the Northern Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce and BizLaunch to help them get started in the area.
NerdWallet used seven metrics to analyze 111 U.S. metropolitan areas with populations greater than 100,000 to create its list, focusing on the strength of the overall economic environment and the success of existing black businesses for each area.
