"I guarantee you have a better chance of getting money from our unclaimed property than you do of winning the lottery," says Maryland's Comptroller Peter Franchot. "And it's free. You don't have to buy a ticket."
The money is kept in state treasuries and comes from inactive bank accounts, stock dividends, insurance payouts, uncashed paychecks, and store refunds.
Jeff Barnette, Associate Treasurer for the District, says the city is holding $165-million in cash and items.
Maryland and Virginia have close to $2 billion worth of cash and items waiting to be claimed.
"I don't think the general public is aware of it," says Virginia Treasurer, Manju Ganeriwala, "and sometimes people are skeptical."
This was the case for Kyle Mealey, a recent college graduate from Bethesda.
"I had a family friend of ours call me up," says Mealey.
Once he did a little investigating, Mealey realized he had $700 coming his way.
"The money is coming from Guitar Center," says Mealey. "I had sold them some used gear I had and then closed my bank account before they could credit it. Plus I moved."
"It's Christmas," says Comptroller Franchot. "We're holding money for over 870-thousand people. Go for it."
Maryland, Virginia and the District paid out $100 million in claims last year. The average payout was $1,000. But it isn't just cash.
Luxury items are waiting to be claimed from the vaults of our state and city treasuries. Things like a 4-carat diamond ring, a bracelet 7 times blingier than that, art work, silver, and collectibles such as baseball cards and Confederate dollar bills.
There is also the unusual. In Virginia there is the prosthetic leg. In Maryland. an urn dating back to 1995, filled with the cremated remains of Barbara de Gruchy. And in DC, a madam's little black book chock full of names.
"We won't get into specifics of the names," says Associate Treasurer Barnette. "No one has claimed that one yet."
The items come primarily from dormant safe deposit boxes that are handed over to the states.
"We are actually holding some jewels right now that are valued at over $600,000," says Treasurer Ganeriwala.
When items aren't claimed they are eventually auctioned off by the states and city on eBay.
"It's your money and property," says Comptroller Franchot. "Why don't you go and look for it?"
