UPDATED at 4:15 PM

At a noon press conference, Buffalo Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo said there was a 911 report of someone who may be trapped inside 1815 Genesee just before 4:00 this morning. Lt. Charles "Chip" McCarthy of Rescue Company 1 and Firefighter Jonathan Croom of Ladder Company 7, both on the first alarm, went into the building to search for the possible victim. A mayday was called a little more than a half-hour into the indicent. The bodies of the two firefighters were found together in the basement of the structure after the first floor collapsed.

Lt. McCarthy was 45-years-old and a 22-year veteran. Firefighter Croom was 34-years-old and had 10-years on the department.

The fire occurred in the 1815 Genesee Street at the Super Speedy Deli. It was reported at 3:49 AM.

The fireground audio clearly has dispatchers providing the report of people trapped. Engine 31 reported smoke showing as the crew left its quarters and confirmed the report of people trapped as they arrived on the scene. Engine 31 also reports confirmation of a basement fire and command tells firefighters to use caution.

An additional two engines and a ladder were requested.

Later there is a report of a person possibly trapped in the basement. Command tells Rescue 1 Portable there was what sounded like someone pounding on the door in the basement.

At about 4:09 AM, Command gave the following report:

Twenty minutes into 1815 Genesee Street. Two-story ordinary. We are now operating three, inch and three quarter lines. We are doing an agressive interior search. We still have a report of civilians trapped. We believe they may be in the basement. We are going to hold everybody we have including the two and one.

Command soon asks for the balance of the second alarm. There are reports of difficulty getting into a basement door and deteriorating conditions on the first floor.

Here is the report from Command at the thirty-minute mark:

Thirty minutes into 1815 Genesee Street. Still continuing to operate all hands. We will continue to hold the second alarm.

The mayday occurs a short time later after a discussion with Ladder 14 about progress on the basement door. As a number of units try to determine more about the mayday, Rescue 1 reports, "I believe I hear screaming in the front of the basement number one side."

Excerpts from The Buffalo News report by Gene Warner, Brian Meyer and Pete Simon:

Reports from the scene indicated the two firefighters may have fallen through the first floor while searching for a civilian victim. Earlier reports that someone was trapped inside were not confirmed, and some officials said they doubted a third person had been trapped.

"It's a very tragic day for the city of Buffalo," Mayor Byron W. Brown said during a noon news conference. "Our hearts are broken right now."

McCarthy leaves behind his wife, three children and a 6-month-old grandchild. Croom leaves behind a 9-month-old child and a fiancee. A few years ago, Croom himself lost a young child.

Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo fought back tears during the news conference, saying he knew both men and described them as "terrific firefighters" who both received honors for their work in the past.

The two firefighters' deaths represent the first multiple loss of life in the Buffalo Fire Department since five firefighters and two civilians were killed in a propane explosion on North Division Street in December 1983.

Ehmed Mallahi said based on what he observed shortly after the fire broke out, he thinks the building was unoccupied at the time.

"It's a shame they risked lives, because I don't think there was anyone in there at the time," Mallahi said. However, another neighbor who lived upstairs from the deli, Hamood Abdulla, said he heard what appeared to a burglar alarm. He went outside, didn't see anything, called the owner and later smelled smoke. That's when he called 911.

Meanwhile, a passerby came by and yelled, "Does anybody need help?" according to Abdulla.

"Somebody from inside said, "Help me,'" he added. "He kept saying, "Help me.'"

While those reports appeared to conflict, it's possible both accounts are accurate, that a civilian — possibly a burglar — was inside the building but fled before firefighters arrived at the scene.

To the families and friends of Lieutenant McCarthy and Fireman Croom, of the Buffalo, New York Fire Department, we offer our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences. This is a tragic day for the City of Buffalo and the fire service world wide. May these men rest in peace.

My heart is broken with the loss of these two brothers.
I'll be praying for the survivors, the family and the community.

As I listened to the radio traffic for this alarm, I was impressed with the leadership and the system in place. The firefighters were brave and aggressive with the fire attack. The FAST-Team/RIT was assigned and ready. The IC was not afraid to delegate responsibility as other Chiefs became available. He called for additional companies and had them immediately available in staging. The Dispatchers were giving the IC time-hacks and he was continually monitoring the fire conditions.

With all the good things the IC and the system was accomplishing, we (the Fire Service) still have two dead firefighters... WHY.???

Because our Pride so often will not allow us to admit defeat...
"Defeat" as in TIME'S UP.!!!
We cannot stop this GROWING FIRE with aggressive offensive tactics.
TIME'S UP.. no more residents can be saved.
TIME'S UP .. get all the firefighters out while they an still get out.
TIME'S UP .. go defensive....
Heavy streams from the outside and fill the basement with HI-X Foam.

We need to STOP trading firefighters for JUNK.!!!

“For 200 years we’ve been providing a service at the expense of those providing the service.” Alan Brunacini, Fire Chief (ret) PFD

May Lt McCarhty and FF Croom rest in peace.

Listening to more radio traffic than Dave has posted here:

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?feedId=745

(go to the audio archives at the bottom)

Ladder 7 gives another all clear on the accountablity between 0442 and 0457 (times according to the archive names).

During this time period there were reports of FF's on the first floor partially fallng through the floor. Command pulled everyone out. Ladder 7 reported all clear after this.

Command becomes aware that FF Croom may be missing between 0457 and 512 and attempts to raise him.

Continuing to listen:

It appears that FF Croom comes up on the radio between 0512 and 0527. A FF says "I'm here. I'm right here. I'm accounted for." Not in any apparent distress.

They dispatch tries to raise him again about 10 minutes later and there is no response.

God bless the brothers and thier families, may they rest in peace. The command of this fire was an outstanding example of calm control, situational awareness and professionalisim. Hats off to the exceleent dispatchers on this call. After listening to the Charleston incident tapes, this incident shows that we can do this right when we have the proper training and competent command and leadership.

When duty call's me, oh Lord,
Wherever Flames may rage,
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever Be its age.

Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate

Enable me to be alert,
and oh Lord, guide my every move,
for life is so precious,
please don't let us loose.

I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me
To guard my every neighbor
And protect their property

And if according to thy will,
That I must give my life,
Then with thy protecting hand my Lord,
I pray thee, protect my children and my wife.

Amen

Alan Brunacini, Fire Chief (ret) PFD you should stay retired and keep your mouth shut. You are an embarrassment to your former self and anything that you ever did good for the fire service has been washed away over the past 5-10 years with your ego and mouth.

Why dont we let these brothers GRIEVE first before you start pointing fingers and laying blame.

I guess you are so all knowing that you dont have to wait for the after incident report. I guess you are so all knowing that you didnt have to be there to know exactly what these brothers were faced with.

Do us all a favor and keep your mouth shut and crawl in to a hall and wait for your last alarm!

Sid

Sid,

I think that was an Anonymous poster quoting Brunacini not Brunacini himself. So before you mouth off about Alan and drag him into this, please take the time to read the posts more carefully.

Yes, I agree that 43 and the whole department for that matter was very professional, competent, and aggressive. Sorry the results were so tragic.

Regardless of whether that was Brunacini or some guy who wishes he could be his friend with benefits. This is not the forum for those thoughts or comments. To second guess what those brave men did within hours and days of this tragic loss, and before these men are even laid to rest is disgusting. If you want to be safe and stay outside then fine, do that in your own backyard. Everyone in the fire service needs to stop telling people in other jurisdictions how to do their jobs. Every community is different, operates differently and with different resources. To try and apply a standard to everyone and say that they should not have been inside because in my city or town we pull out after five minutes is insulting. Keep you own SOP's in your own backyard.

Let us grieve for these brave men, their brothers of the BFD, and their families, and lay them to rest before all the safety gurus step out from the rocks they hide under and start telling everyone how to fight fires from the outside.

God Speed Lt. McCarthy and FF Croom, may you now watch over and protect all those that you love.

My heart goes out to the BFD and there families

It does sound like that person is questioning my dad and ff croom as to the way they did their job of lieutenant/fireman, they were heros! before this fire and always! they did their job and laid their life on the line each on the line each and everyday not because they had to but because they chose to, my father bid in to rescue 1 he was not put there, it is the busiest house in the city in a city with a disproportionately high number of fires for its size. I was blessed to have been raised by such an amazing man, he was not only an incredible father but a very knowledgeable lieutenant fireman, i ask only that you give him the respect he well deserves. May God Bless You Dad My Angel in Heaven Always
