Quick takes
This is a DC Fire & EMS Department photo of the first of three fires Wednesday morning. This one at 2218 North Capitol Street killed a woman and critically injured her 14-year-old grandson. DCFD.com has the who series of photos including the rescue of the teen. Click here. Read and watch the story from wusa9.com.
Virginia chief explains VFD takeover: Prince William County Fire & Rescue Department Chief Kevin McGee lays out the reasons for the takeover of the Gainesville District VFD last Friday. Chief McGee also gives his plan for bringing volunteers back to the Gainesville. All of it is spelled out in an open letter that Chief McGee shared with STATter 911. Click here to read it.
Insurance company reverses pollution stance: You may recall we told you a month ago about the Great American Insurance Company's legal argument in the lawsuit over the deaths of three people in a 2007 Houston office building fire. In short, the company said survivors weren't due any money because the deaths were caused by smoke pollution. The bad publicity surrounding that tactic now has the insurance company trying a different tactic. Read the latest.
At least one person showed up with a camera: Finally some pictures of a multi-million dollar 4-alarm fire just up the road from STATter 911's world headquarters. Unfortunately us media types mostly ignored the Fairfax County fire due to our focus on the Inauguration. But Nate Camfiord, Mutual Box Media, got some shots and shares them here.
Baltimore City FD video: This was posted on YouTube yesterday titled "So you want to be a Baltimore City Firefighter"? It had the following caption- This is a trailer for the upcoming documentary on Firefighter/EMT training for the Baltimore City Fire Department. This is BCFD Class 08-01. Produced by DC1 John D. Cornelius, Captain, U. S. Coast Guard Fire Department. Interesting in that it didn't seem to mention or show pictures of any EMS duties or training.
