Public Safety Director: "There shouldn't have been medic units unstaffed".

Watch interview with Public Safety Director Vernon Herron

On Wednesday, October 1, we reported on the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department furlough plan for medic units. At least two medic units a day began going out of service for eight-hour stretches beginning on September 28. In fact, we went on TV and used wusa9.com to let the public know what day their neighborhood paramedics wouldn't be making house calls.

On Monday, October 6, as the schedule we obtained clearly showed, Medic 846 (Largo) would be unavailable for eight-hours. It turns out those eight-hours coincided with Largo neighbor Lawrence Waller's cardiac arrest.

Now today, Prince George's County Public Safety Director Vernon Herron told 9NEWS NOW reporter Peggy Fox, "There shouldn't have been medic units unstaffed".

I don't know when or if Chief Lawrence Sedgwick informed Herron that medic units would be out of service due to furloughs, but spokesman Mark Brady told STATter 911 yesterday that the chief had been working closely with his bosses in Upper Marlboro throughout the furlough process.

Yesterday, Chief Sedgwick revised his furlough directive, making it very clear from this point on medic units would stay in service despite the furlough mandate.

Comments:
Duh...I told him not to do it but he did it anyway....oh well only one taxpayer! This clown looks like a dumbass....I feel sorry for you guys!!! You work for a bunch of ass clowns!!!

Herron flips-flops on issues depending on the climate and politics at hand. He should learn the phrase "no comment". He really does not have a clue to what he is talking about and that reflects in his TV interviews. "Stupid is as Stupid does.

A question should be directed to MR. Herron when will the Major and Captain assigned to his office from the Fire Department - and both certified paramedics - be detailed out in the field to ride these medic units?? Seems funny everyone else takes a hit with furloughs and time away from their position to ride the medic units except for his staff. It's not the Major or Captains fault - both good guys - it is Herrons reluctance to allow them to do it. Also, should Herrons Fire/EMS Department Staff be re-deployed to the field to assist in the already over-budget overtime?? Howard County Herron is jumping all over the Fire Chief about excessive OT - yet Herron will not let his Major and Captain out of administrative duties to help out.

Please note that the rank of Major is being used - has anyone in the PGFD been made aware of the most recent promotion that occurred several weeks ago???

If Herron ever alludes to the fact he was not aware of paramedics being furloughed would go un-staffed - it would be a flat out mis-truth.

Herron needs to learn how to stay out of the Fire/EMS Department and concentrate on the Police Department and 911 Furlough plan - if you think the Fire/EMS Departments furlough has had impact on public safety - wait until you hear what the PGPD and 911 have in store!!!

An interesting twist to this is that supposedly there could have been two furlough induced deaths that day. After 7 am that morning there was another "one not breathing" call that came in to medic 46 first due. The off duty crew, thinking their relief was not there, took the call and reportedly revived a 36 year old mother who was 4 months post partum. They returned to the station to find their supervisor waiting for them wanting to know why they took a call when the unit was out of service for furlough. You wuold think there would have been congratulations waiting instead of critism.

Lets not forget the personal paramedic assigned to Jack at all Redskins games, and guess who pays for it? The taxpayers. They are not to move from the door of his suite (outside in the hallway) until told to by Jack.

A Major and a Captian in Herrons' office? Always has been a waste of manpower, but somebody has to keep his head above water cause this moron can't swim here.

Oh lets not forget it's his blue explorer parked in the walkway at the front on FedEx Field at the games.

Somebody let me up, I've had enough.

The upper management of this county has been rolling the dice, hoping they dont come up with snake eyes! The media is the best friend for all public safety personnel and the public. Thank you for working hard in getting the information out there! These shady individuals who lead lavish lifestyles are feeling the heat!!

If homicides werent a daily thing in gorgeous prince george's.. you would be hearing alot more on the cutbacks with police too!

Read between the lines, Herron is protecting himself and the fire chief by saying that so when a lawsuit comes down. They will claim that the station officer or Battalion Chief did it without their approval. By saying that they are using that interview to give them a defense
