You're Done
Politicians have over sized egos. In fact sometimes they are downright delusional. New York Governor Eliot Spitzer would appear to fall into that category. How does he think he can survive this sex scandal?
I remember years ago my old boss Brian Bracco used to bound down the stairs into
our newsroom and say to me with a broad smile, "He's done, he can't survive this." He was referring to then Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton. It seemed like Clinton was facing the drip, drip, drip that adds up to water boarding in politics. Stories ranged from allegations of draft dodging, womanizing, and marijuana smoking. Brian liked to talk to me about politics and Clinton, because he knew I had covered him years before when he was the Attorney General in Arkansas. I used to say don't be so sure. I would never say that about Spitzer.
This time it's
different. New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has a big problem going for him. Americans are willing to forgive, although they never forget. You can put together a list of folks who've been able to survive sex scandals. Don't believe me, ask actor Hugh Grant. Remeber Senators David Vitter, and Larry Craig, or how about sportscaster Marv Albert. Why do some survive and others do not? That's hard to say. But think I know with certainty, Americans have problems with sanctimonious pompous blowhards. One guy on Wall Street summed it up this way, "He's holier than thou, and he got what he deserved!"
We stopped into one of our favorite spots last night. At Fat Tuesdays it was all anyone was talking about. As one guy said to me, "It's always the guys who preach to us that se
em to fall from grace." He cited Ted Haggard, Jimmy Swaggart and Jim Bakker. Bottom line in America, if you preach they'll pounce. Someone close to Spitzer will have to pull him aside today and say "You're done!"
Because as my old boss Brian Bracco used to say, "He's done, he can't survive this." This time around Brian would be right.

What gets me is, as it has been said; using his resignation as some sort of plea agreement. Asking that he not be charged with a federal crime so he can retain his license to practice law.
He has nothing left to sell, because after all this I'm certain he will be forced out of office. It would just be a lot uglier...
I don't lump celebrities in with politicians when it comes to scandal. Even 'Ginger' got caught the other day with marijuana in her car and was charged with a DUI.
Politicians are different because their job is supposed to be a sacred trust. I tried to forgive Bill Clinton, but I cannot ever forget. It's not selective partisan memory either, He is just a good liar IMO. they called him Slick Willy in Arkansas did they not?
What he (Bill and Monica) did was in an inexcusable period of weakness. Incomprehensible to me for a man that is leading a Nation.
His (Bill's) ability to bend the truth (but I never inhaled marijuana) is what made this possible. His success only made future bad behavior more attractive, because people would swallow his excuses. "He did it because he could".
Craig? Although he never resigned, he's a lame Duck, and will not get another Senate seat. He should have resigned, but it's not worth the trouble to force him out over his foolishness.
Spitzer broke real Laws regarding the transactions to cover up his trail, and that with the geography involved. Which could mean (to me) there are other unrelated payola style crimes that we will never hear about. I say that because with what has been revealed, there is no level of trust in his service to New York. He could have been doing many other illegal and more serious crimes, just more cautiously.
That's why lumping celeb's in with politicians is not a way to describe this, it dilutes the severity of it all. Celeb's affect our lives in trivial ways, where politicians can have a meaningfully direct and lasting affect. That is why this behavior now should be taken very seriously even if it never was in the past.

I'm mad as hell and I just can't take it anymore!
Good points. My only reason for touching on Hugh Grant and Marv Albert is because like politicians, people can vote on them. No one goes to watch Hugh and he's not a bankable star. No one watches the ballgame that Marv is calling and he won't have a job. There is no doubt that politicians affect our lives in a way that is far more important than celebrities. My point is this country can forgive and move on. But that won't happen with him. For many of the points you bring up, this isn't just about a call girl, it's about money laundering too.
