Farewell to Sgt. 1st Class Collin Bowen

When I opened my newspaper on March 16th and saw a story about another soldier who had given his life for our country, I started to post a link to that article. I'm glad I waited because today I learned so much more about Sgt. 1st Class Collin Bowen.

His story came to life as I sat inside of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Landover Hills. Rev. Samuel Giese talked about how hard it was to say goodbye to a husband, father, son, brother and friend as full of life as Collin was. Griese, who is a chaplain for the Maryland Army National Guard, brought laughter from the tears when he reminded everyone that Collin had entered a Latin dance contest on a cruise and won! He then told his family and friends to remember the Fallen Warrior dancing with God in Heaven.

Outside the church, I was touched by the sight of the Patriot Guard Riders who came to escort the soldier on his final journey. One of the motorcycle riders handed teddy bears to Collin's daughters.

This was not a time to try to talk to any of his family members, but commanders and soldiers who served with Collin praised his courage and commitment. The complete interviews with 1st Lt. Christopher Keene, Major T. J. Sullins, Master Sgt. Jeffrey Lowe, and Major Robert Paolucci are worth hearing.

His story aired on 9 NEWS NOW on March 25th. You can still see it here and read the web story.

Bowen was wounded in an IED explosion that killed two other American soldiers and there Afghan interpreter on January 2nd. He fought for life until he died on March 14th. A website dedicated to Collin and produced by his widow, Ursula, has many touching photos and messages about this dedicated soldier and family man.
