DC Police Want to Search Homes For Guns

DC Mayor Adrian Fenty and Police Chief Cathy Lanier have launched a new anti gun violence initiative that asks homeowners to voluntarily allow police into their residences to search for illegal guns.

It's but one part of a three part program announced today at Seventh District Police headquarters; It's the home searches for guns that got the most questions from reporters.

Chief Lanier says they're hoping parents who suspect their children might have guns will call police to come confiscate the weapons. Lanier says the homeowner will be granted amnesty from the city's law that prohibits people from owning handguns in their homes--unless it's determined the weapon was used in a crime-then all bets are off--a full criminal investigation would be launched.

I should also point out that the new Safe Homes Initiative comes a week before the US Supreme Court is set to hear arguments over the DC handgun ban. A lower court ruled the law that prohibits handguns n the home is unconstitutional and violates the second amendment right to bear arms.

First I don't think that Police Chief Lanier nor Mayor Fenty understand what they are asking residents. Why would someone want to invite the police into thier homes to search for illegal weapons? Maybe the Mayor and the police chief need to go back to the drawing board and revamp thier question. How about asking residents to just turn over any illegal guns that they may have. I don't like this because this there is no way for the resident to know that what they find will not come back to haunt them. Isn't there something in the constitution about this?

Just another reason that I'll never live in Washington, DC. Looking forward to seeing the Supreme Court correct a long standing violation of DC residents' rights. Criminals prefer unarmed victims.

I've thought about this situation long and hard and here's my thing. If you were to take all of the guns from the good, law-abiding residents of DC, How are they going to defend themselves against the criminals? The police might not get there in time. Brooms and baseball bats can't stop bullets. DC has a crime problem. Taking the guns from law abiding residents will just create more victims. Gun control is needed, not elimination. The criminals won't give up their guns, will they? Then you have to think about the criminals in Maryland and Virginia who must be salivating at the thought of a city full of helpless people who can't defend themselves against them since Fenty and Lanier decided to ban guns altogether.
