Buddy, We Need Your Marrow
But at a Black History Month Program, sponsored by the Department of Health & Human Services in Rockville, Md, my awareness was raised about the critical need for Bone Marrow Donors, specifically minority donors.
Did you know that on any given day more than 6,000 men, women and children are searching the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Registry for a life-saving donor like you?
Former First Lady of the District of Columbia, Effie Barry, died last year before a suitable match could be made. And this month, OSCAR nominate
d JAWS actor Roy Scheider, also died of a blood disease.
It took less than 10-minutes for me to register as a bone marrow donor today. I filled out the paperwork with the help of Gina Boyd of the National Institutes of Health's Marrow Registration Program. Her father died of a blood disease while waiting for a donor.
If I am lucky enough to make a match, I could provide hope to a family and possibly help cure a child, a young mother, father, or your friend suffering from leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases that can be treated by a bone marrow or cord blood transplant.

Special thanks to EEO Specialist Kay Nitta for inviting me to be a guest speaker for the Black History Month porgram.

We saw your story this morning on bone marrow donors. If more publicity was given to bone marrow and platelet donations, perhaps more people would be willing to donate. My wife and I are regular platelet donors at INOVA Fairfax, driving 70 miles one way to donate.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for watching. To bring publicity to this need is exactly why I showed my registering for the Marrow program on air this morning.
I hope what I did encourages others to follow my lead.

Hello Andrea:
Thank you for your prompt attention to the marrow need! I watched the show this morning along with my family including my mom, Bea, whose husband (my father) as you know died of multiple myeloma. It did our hearts so good to see the word getting out to help other families. And your blog is just perfect.
I wanted to share my local contact information with anyone in this Metro area who wants to join the Donor Registry or help out as an alternative to contacting the 800 number. I will be happy to assist anyone interested in enrolling or answer questions at my email: boydg@cc.nih.gov or cell phone 202.345.5412.
Blessings to you and all you do for health awareness. I learned a lot from your excellent breast cancer presentation yesterday and have decided to become active in this cause. I hope our paths cross again soon.
Warmest regards,
Gina

Good Morning GIna,
Glad you were watching and thank you for your moving presentation yesterday DHHS/Rockville. I hope more people will follow my lead and register for the marrow program. Two of my colleagues were talking about it this morning. I think they may register now too. I'm glad EEO Specialist Kay Nitta put us on the same program
Thank you for all you're doing; my best to your mother.
