Plenty On Tap For May!

Long time, no write. But it’s the start of a new month and we have plenty on tap from the Buddy Check 9 Corner.

To all of our Buddies, Happy May! At 9 News Now we’re kicking off our countdown to the Race For the Cure. The race is Saturday, June 2nd on the National Mall. If you haven’t registered, just check out the 9 News Now website for a convenient link.

Also, starting May 3rd, just one month shy of race day, 9News Now begins a series of Buddy Check reports on how you and your neighbors are helping Komen For the Cure founder Nancy Brinker keep the promise she made to her big sister Susan 25-years ago. That is to live in a world without breast cancer.

Komen has raised more than a billion dollars for research screening & education. The National Institute of Health/National Cancer Institute are at the forefront when it comes to research. Thursday our story focuses on one way the body can fight disease with its own immune system. Researchers are study a promising cancer vaccine and they’re looking for survivors to take part in an important clinical trail. That’s Thursday May 3rd.

On Buddy Check 9 Day, a breast cancer that occurs “one in a blue moon.” Why doctors first thought this was another disease, not cancer. That on the 9th of May.

Breast Cancer is not for women only. Robert Heyer is one of the many male survivors committed to finding the cure. His story on May 10th.

NIH Is conducting a study on a new medical device that has the potential to diagnose lymphedema (swelling in the arm) early in women treated for breast cancer. That’s May 17th.

Meet the CHEM Striders, a Komen For the Race team that first crossed the finish line in 1997 after losing colleagues and friends to the disease. That’s May 24th.

Memorial Day a preview of Komen For the Cure’s call to action campaign – “The Promise”. That’s Monday May 28th.

Tuesday – A Survivor’s Story. How Vivianna Irizarri wants to educate women about a type of cancer rarely detected through mammography. That on May 29th.

Wednesday – I’m Still Me – Victoria LaRosa, a 2-time breast cancer survivor knows that cancer changes everything in your life., but it doesn’t have to rob you of yourself. She owns a one stop boutique that helps survivors get on with the business of living after cancer. I’m Still Me is on May 30th.

Thursday – Dr. Elmer Huerta uses mass media to promote Early Detection in the Hispanic community in the metro area. Combined, his radio & television audiences top nearly a half million listeners. We share his vision on May 31st.

Friday – It was a promise between two sisters. But that promise started a conversation world wide about breast cancer. The founder of Komen For the Cure, Nancy Brinker, tells us how it all began and the goals for the future. That’s on June 1st.
