Rene Syler Update

A lot of people have been asking me about former CBS Early Morning anchor Rene Syler. As you recall, Rene decided to have a prophylactic double mastectomy so she would not have to face the pain and fear of a breast cancer diagnosis. Breast Cancer claimed her father’s life and her mother is a survivor. I have been in contact with her and Friday’s surgery went well.

In her own words, these were her thoughts the day before surgery.

Many people of you have called me brave. I didn't feel especially so. It was about survival for me, sticking around a long time for my husband and kids. Living the life that I adore so much, watching my kids learn and grow, date people I will not accept and generally find other ways to make me crazy. It is about living to the fullest, not hobbled by illness, until God takes me from this earth.”

Rene allowed a video camera to follow her through the ordeal. You can see that footage when she appears on the OPRAH show, Watch TV listings for a date.

Also, she asks that we all TIVO her guest starring role opposite Rosie on THE VIEW. Rene will be a guest anchor April 17th.

Later this month, she’ll be starting her book tour. We hope to have her on 9NEWS NOW @ 9am when the tour comes through DC. And we may see her at the Komen Race For The Cure in June. Komen has asked Rene to be an International Ambassador reaching out to minority women to educate them about the importance of early detection.

And don’t forget to call your Buddy and remind her to perform a self check, schedule a mammogram if over age 40 and make an appointment for an exam by a doctor or nurse practitioner. It can make a difference!
