The Hard Goodbye
There were some sniffles on the WUSA news set this afternoon
as we covered the funeral of Sean Taylor. They were mostly (I think) mine.
How could you not weep when Taylor's girlfriend's sister came to the podium and cried for 5 minutes straight while she thanked Taylor and her sister for demonstrating the greatest feat of unconditional love she'd ever seen?
On the other hand, you had to laugh when Taylor's high school teammate and friend Buck Ortega mentioned that when the two first went spear fishing together, and Taylor seemed to be able to dive deep and resurface without blowing the water pressure from his ears, it was "the first time he knew "Sean wasn't totally human."
And how could you hold it back when a desperately shaken Lavar Arrington took the stage to speak his regrets about the things he never said enough to his friend Sean--and then went on to tell his former Redskin teammates how much he loved them?
After a week of mostly just talking about the death of this promising star football player, today we got the up-close-and-personal on what he meant to those who really knew Sean Taylor..described by his agent as a soft, loving man.
Yes, we could have done without Jesse Jackson's football metaphors for our overly violent society. ("Somebody got around our line and killed our safety!") Or, honestly, Joe Gibbs' proselytizing.
But heartfelt sentiments from people with broken hearts are what funerals are supposed to be about. To me, it didn't matter so much that thousands turned out to say goodbye to Sean Taylor. What counts is that Sean Taylor was well-loved, and those who knew him best cared enough to share just a fragment of that love with us today.

REST IN PEACE,SEAN!
i was touched about the whole service and hope that everybody really knew and cared as much as they said they did .I wonder when he was in trouble and on the news before did they really care than. Why is it when we loose someone it seems like everyone care, too late seek god before all of this .I know someone had to see these boys that killed him headed for trouble before this I thank God that sean got it together before it was to late.My heart goes out to the parents of these boys but I want to know where were you when these kids were out there planning to break in and rob someone house and take something that didnot belong to them.Did they know that they were stealing or they were just that stupid. To just take someone life is just out right wrong not a break in gone wrong they had no business be in seans house if he was home or not .Parents teach your children while they can be taught.what would the parents be saying if Sean had blowed all four or five of their heads off. What than.Stop your children from acting and looking like thugs. One of the boys head was so nappy he should have been at home combing his natty head.they want to be killer now they have to pay for their crimes.trying to take what don't belong to them and this just wasnot the first time they did it before they just got away the first time.We need to pray for our youth like never before.Saen family lost a family member at the hands of these killers that is just what they are and they need to pay .People put the guns down you can't solve anything like that.we in washington DC. Prince Georges County loose people to guns everyday maybe they will do more about this now before another football or basketball player or movie star dies. I had abrother killed in 1999 and his murder was never solved he was killed in my mothers house also.I found his body.I know what that it like and no one payed for this crime but that because he was not some one you see on t.v. all the time .He was someone son brother ,grandson So to the taylor family my heart goes out one good thing they won't be on the streets to do it again.Maybe you all can begin to heal now I 'm sorry that you all had to go though this I'm proud of you all. I can say you made it though and your still here to carry the on keep Saen alive through all the good that goes on from this point Maybe you can speak out against gun voilence don't let him dying be in vain there is a purpose for everything find that purpose.Peace be unto you and the Nation It's time to heal the land though prayers for each other.Love isn't Love until you give it away.
