Abominable Snow, Man

You know you're getting old when you're (the
only) bald Black man in Vail, Colorado, and you
absolutely fail to intimidate anyone.

More likely, its just that the folks there are very, very friendly. This is my odd way of saying I had a great time on my ski vacation, even though I got sick and didn't figure out the deal on the free hot chocolate and cookies until the last day. But more on that later. First...

Ski trails. They've all got names. The 'green' or easy slopes get comforting sobriquets like Hunky Dory and Over Easy. Its just another way of saying You Really Can't Ski So Please Go This Way, So We Don't Have to Come Up Rescue You.

But it really gets interesting at the top of the mountain where the trails are the ominous sounding 'black diamonds.' Even if I was a really experienced skier I might hesitate to head down something called 'No Way Out' or 'Dragon's Teeth'. And no resort is complete without the requisite memorial trail...called something like "Face of Hal", and in smaller type, "This trail is in remembrance of Hal Johnson." That's all well and good, but I'm thinking what happened to Hal, and more importantly where did it happen? Yeah, you get my drift. No pun intended.

And let me throw this little figure at ya: 9 degrees Fahrenheit. As in that was as hot as it got last Saturday on Vail Mountain. But before you call me a weather wimp (Topper!!) you should know I stayed out there all day and now everyone says you can still live a good productive life with only 7 toes.
Then early Sunday morning, my stomach took a ski trip without leaving my body. Lets just say I was in the room all day and it wasn't 'cause I was watching football. (But did anyone see that Pittsburgh-Jacksonville game??)
It is good to be home..where snow is only good for getting the day off from school, backing up the traffic and scaring the dickens out of folks who watch the news.

Welcome back. The last time I skied (almost died trying), I hit a tree harder than Cheech and Chong! Never again... I enjoy eating steak, chicken and ribs too much to smack another tree and begin spitting out my Chicklets!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Glad you had a great time, but sorry to hear you had a bug because then you'd have had an even better time.

I can recount a lot about skiing from my childhood. Way back before it became the 'cool' (no pun intended) thing to do.

On frostbite....
Our father took us to Charnita (now known as Ski Liberty) when we lived in Hagerstown. We'd load up the wagon with his old wooden leather strap ski's and 5 boys. Get there about 6pm and ski till midnight. (Tell Topper this was when the mini ice age was upon us, so it was "cold") Single digit temps were pretty common, and I loved it. As a 7-9 yr old I knew no fear and I was fast to graduate from the rope tow to the lift.
It was when we were leaving and I was turning in my boots... It felt like my feet were on fire! The pain was nearly enough to bring tears to my eyes. It was the nerves in my toes waking up, having gone numb from the cold. Did'nt stop me though... I was ready for more the next trip. It was a blast.

Interestingly enough, my younger brother hated every minute of it, but now he is certified National Ski Rescue. He's an EE for GE in upstate NY, but does this on the side to support his hobby of skiing.

My oldest brother has a condo in Vale (I think) or one of the resorts out in Colorado.

Me.. I don't ski anymore, but still can. If I could take the time off... maybe. But at my workplace help is short and winter time... busy.

I was on the slopes maybe 5 years ago with my younger bro. He skied black and I took the easy ones.
