Protesters Strike the Post Over Barry Controversy

Protesters who are supporting Marion Barry's fight with the Washington Post showed up at Post headquarters Sunday morning with their newspapers.

Lead by Radio One on air personality Joe Madison the demonstrators said they were returning their Sunday paper each week until the Post management fires Pulitzer prize winning music critic Tim Page for his controversial comments about Barry.

Page in an email to Barry's communications manager referred to the Councilman and former Mayor as a Crack Addict" and "Useless". Page also suggested he could care less if Barry, now an admitted addict, "overdosed".

Joe Madison called Page's comments part of the culture of contempt for black leaders

Washington Post management apologized for Pages remarks and placed him on suspension. Tim Page has also apologized for his email.

Nine News Now first broke this story last Sunday night at eleven. Most of the web response has been in support of Page; but Joe Madison says Page should be fired and the protesters plan to return their Sunday Washington Post next week or until the Post takes further action.

Tim Page has long been scheduled to take a leave of absence in 2008 to teach at USC. He just started a bit early.

There is more than one unprofessional action in this story. Has Mr. Barry's Communication Director apologized yet for sending a press release to a Classical Music critic who has never been a reporter on Metro stories in 30 years of journalism?

Best,

Mike

One wrong don't make it right.

The type of comments that Tim Page made shows that the practice of "white supremacy" here in America is alive and well, practiced and condoned, especially when those of us are attempting to change things for the betterment of "all people".

It has no place in the work place or any other place. He needs to be fired or continue the boycott, afterall the only color that should matter is "green".

Anonymous: I've read the intemperate comments by Tim Page, for which he has understandably expressed regret.

Mr. Page never mentioned race. Not once.

Mr. Page was tired of receiving spam -- irrelevant email -- from the staff of Mr. Barry's office. Many people of all origins can relate to that. That flaming email seems to have finally gotten the attention of the Barry staff. I bet they don’t send email to the Post’s Classical Music critic anymore.

Mr. Licht:

The only thing Tim Page regrets is getting caught!!!! You know a phone call would have done one better, than that nasty disrespectful email.

He would not have made such comments if he had known they were going to be published, and he was going to get sanctioned. Matter of fact, he probably didn't care if his comments got published. What he cares about is getting sanctioned, and it appears from your comment that he did not even get that, which means that the Washington Post continues to condone his conduct.

Surely you can read between the lines. Why would he have been so blatantly disrespectful? What has Marion Barry ever done to Tim Page for him to receive such "disrespectful" comments? Afterall, it's not like Marion Barry personally sent Tim Page an email.

His comments were extremely race-related and I don't think he would have made such comments if it were a white council member involved. It appears from the email he is comfortable in making such comments because it is the type of talk he is accustomed to around his so-called peers.

His comments reflect the fact that he thinks he is a "superior" person with no regard for being called on the carpet for his comments or actions. Does he do this with every piece of "spam email" he receives?

Continue the boycott until he is fired. Make an example out of him. Teach him and others like him a lesson that the only color that should matters in America is "green".

What is he apologizing for - - getting caught? He can't be sorry, because he never would have said it if he didn't mean it.

Tim Page being a classical Music critic, too bad - - some of that "class" did not rub off on him.
