  The Cabinet Maker
I was painting with my Dad one day. I was probably no older than ten at the time. I cannot remember exactly what we were painting but I stop painting one area and my Dad asked me why I did not paint that part of the project. I responded by saying that no one will see that area. He asked me if I knew the story of the cabinet maker. I did not but was about to. He told me there once was a cabinet maker who also had a son. His son asked him one day why he spent so much time on the inside of the cabinet since no one would ever know or see that part of his work. The cabinet maker responded by saying “I’ll know.” The carpenter made sure the inside of his cabinet was just as strong and neat as the outside. He earned a great reputation for his skill but more than that he slept very well every night.

Ever since that day I always paint the edge on top of the doorway that no one would ever know about, or the back panel of a cabinet because well... I’ll know. I have, of course passed this story on to my girls.

Thanks Dad.

Reminds me of my father.

I don't have a specific story that comes to mind in return, just that in so many ways my father under very trying circumstances raised five boys on his own.

We did some painting as well as numerous 'other' house projects.

My father was an aeronautical engineer, Graduate of VPI; and two of my brothers received degrees from that school as well. One in architecture, and the other an EE.

My younger brother (the EE) has worked for GE most of his career, and is in upstate NY R&D labs now. Amoung other hobbies he is also National ski rescue.

The Architect has his own business doing museum and architectural lighting (based in Georgetown), and has won the Edison award. He travels a lot.

I'm probably the least successful, but my father loved us all equally. It was who we were on the inside that counted most. We got all of that from him.

He was probably a lot like your dad.
